When Killarney Gardens resident and board member Laura Sleeman first invited me to her housing co-op to examine her playground, I despaired at the condition it was in. The playground is more than 20 years old; in disrepair; and un-used. Looking around at the barren ground, the gnarly, wind-damaged Pine Trees and the dilapidated play houses, I could see why.
But Laura Sleeman and other residents of the co-op have decided to take the matter into their own hands. Thanks to a federal government grant generous donations from Kaboom.org, Home Depot and the design input of Projects in Place, the kids of KG will have a new play area by this fall. The first step in that process got under way just this past Wednesday.
Despite the sweltering weather, residents, children and Home Depot volunteers all gathered for a Design Day hosted by Kaboom.org. and PIP director Bryce Gauthier. Special guest Vancouver South MP Ujahl Dosanj came to show his support.
Bryce started things off with a drawing exercise with the children. While kids sketched their visions for the playground of their dreams, one of the older kids had carefully written “Brainstorm” at the top of her page. So, using that as our keyword, the kids came up with many great ideas.
– stumps as benches
-recylcing and compost bins
-keep trees for shade
-play area for dogs
-place for little kids
-writing/drawing wall and community board
-plants for butterfiles, birds
So, now the design of the playground is underway. Thanks for everyone’s enthusiastic participation. Will be posting more information as the design progresses.
