A little too much Jazz! Dorothy Lam Build re-scheduled for October

Posted on: June 22nd, 2015 by Alex

Hi Everyone,

Due to the Vancouver Jazz Festival and the large public performances happening at David Lam Park at the same time as our build this coming weekend, the June 26-28 Dorothy Lam Build needs to be re-scheduled. After extensive discussions with the organizing team over the weekend, we realize that the impacts from the Festival would be significant and detrimental to the build so we have decided to reschedule it for October, the next available spot in the PIPS build schedule.

PIPS and VSOCC want to thank you for your support and hope you’ll join us in October for this event.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused.

Wishing you a safe and happy Summer!

Volunteers Wanted for Dorothy Lam Build

Posted on: May 22nd, 2015 by Admin

It’s summer and it’s time to get your hands dirty!

Projects in Place (PIPS) and the Vancouver Society of Children’s Centres (VSOCC) are partnering again to upgrade a number of VSOCC’s children’s playgrounds to provide more natural environments; develop gardens for the children to grow food to be used in their daily meals; and implement a recycling and composting program.

Our next project build event will be held at Dorothy Lam Children’s Centre on the weekend of June 26/27/28, and you’re invited to help us build something special!! Dorothy Lam Children’s Centre is located next to the much loved David Lam Park and RoundHouse Community Centre, and helps make our downtown more family-friendly for its residents and provide much needed childcare services for workplace parents. Grandview End of Summer Build

Posted on: September 20th, 2014 by Admin

The sun and warm temperatures of summer graced our playground build this weekend at the Grandview Housing Co-op. The mornings were cool but the volunteers quickly warmed up as the sun peaked over the top of the 3-storey building. In addition to cool temperatures, our mornings started with inquisitive kids (from the Co-op and kids of parent volunteers) who would come and inspect our work before being whisked away for a few hours of play. This was great motivation as we got to work with saws, drills, shovels, paintbrushes and measuring tape.

We took a welcome break around noon for some delicious East Van pizza and homemade food lovingly prepared by Co-op members! And whenever there’s pizza, kids are never too far behind… (more…)

Apiary Update

Posted on: August 21st, 2014 by Admin

Since 2012, Projects in Place has been keeping apiaries in an effort to strengthen bee populations, advance urban food security, and in turn foster a sense of connection between agriculture, food production and our daily lives. We also jar and sell a modest amount of honey to help with our fundraising.

On a hot Wednesday afternoon in July, we checked up on two of our hives. Beekeeper Garrett and his partner Emily have been keeping a watchful eye over the health and productivity of the hives which they check on weekly during the summer and less frequently in the winter months.

Here’s a tiny glimpse into the wonderful world of bees.

Our two backyard hives have been loving the shade during July’s hot weather. The residents of the home have also been watering the grass at the foot of the hives at night to provide additional relief and hydration. Morning sun is needed, however, to regulate the bees’ waking cycle.

Interested in getting involved with beekeeping through PIPS?  Contact us if you’re interested in letting us keep bees in your backyard or if you’d like to volunteer. Send us an email at info@projectsinplace.org or sign up to stay informed of future projects here.

The Grandview Housing Co-op is looking to build a new playground and needs your help! Their old playground was rotting and rusting away (now demolished!) and the many kids that have moved in to the co-op badly need a bigger and safer place to play.

Check out their Indiegogo campaign below. Make a contribution, get perks, stay updated and spread the news to your friends… let’s make their dream a reality!

Wonderful Weekends at Library Square

Posted on: June 13th, 2014 by Admin

After two sunny Saturdays in May the Library Square daycare playgrounds have been completely transformed. We added a music centre, drama stage, art centre, planting station, several planters (filled with edible plants) and more to three floors of the daycare. CBC TV was able to capture some of the excitement of the day on the evening local news.

We did it despite the rain!

What happens over two days when hundreds of pounds of lumber, soil, and plants are combined with dozens of amazing volunteers? You get a wonderfully rehabilitated playground in the heart of downtown!
